If your established lawn isn’t thriving, look to your soil. Poor soil quality is the most significant factor in your lawn’s health. Soil provides your lawn nutrients, water, and oxygen; if any of these things aren’t right, your lawn will struggle.
Here are some practical ways to improve your soil quality.
Check your soil quality
A pH test kit is an excellent first step. Ask for one at your local hardware store or garden centres. Turf grows well in well-drained soils with a pH level of about 6.0 and 7.0 but usually flourishes at about 6.5. Anything outside this range could explain why your lawn isn’t thriving.
Top dressing
Applying a rich organic soil mixture to the top of your turf can improve soil quality. If you’ve got sandy soil, top dressing is the best way to boost it:
- apply a 1cm layer of rich soil to your lawn
- water the new soil into the grass until you see no trace.
- Repeat annually in spring or autumn, and you’ll continue to improve your lawn’s soil quality and health.
Wetting agents
Our summers are getting hotter and hotter, and if your lawn doesn’t get enough water, your soil may repel water; this is mainly the case with many Australian soil types. Wetting agents break down the soil’s repellent waxy coating and allow water to flow into and throughout the soil. Once it’s made its way into the soil, the wetting agents help the soil to hold the water for longer and distribute it more effectively. Do this up to three times a year for best results.
Organic Fertilisers
Usually made from manure products or seaweed, try Seasol or Dynamic Lifter for lawns. If used a few times a year, they can help boost the organic richness of the soil feeding your lawn.
Hint: Aerating your lawn before applying organic fertiliser and wetting agents will help the goodness reach the soil more easily. A garden pitchfork will do the trick if you haven’t got a proper lawn coring machine.
